Skills Connect – Courses for Jobseekers

The Restaurant & Hospitality Skillnet supports the workforce development needs of businesses within the restaurant and hospitality industy. We offer a small number/selection of industry-led and fully funded programmes for people who are not in employment, subject to eligibility criteria and the availability of places. If you are currently not in employment and wish to upskill or reskill, please see details below of Skills Connect training for people seeking employment.

These courses range from 5 days to 20 days. The courses focus on providing trainees with the essential skills they need to gain a job in the Restaurant & Hospitality industry and to provide the essential skills for those looking to enter new industries.

Are you eligible for these courses?

Eligible Individuals who are Welfare Payment Recipients

Unemployed people with an entitlement to a Jobseekers Allowance (JA) or Jobseekers Benefit (JB) payment from the Department of Employment Affairs & Social Protection (DEASP) may retain such payments subject to the Back to Education criteria of that Department.

People in receipt of other forms of income support from DEASP may retain such payments subject to the Back to Education criteria of that Department. Other forms of income support include:

  • Disability Allowance
  • Blind Pension
  • Invalidity Pension
  • Illness Benefit
  • Supplementary Welfare Allowance
  • Adult Dependants
  • One Parent Family Payment
  • Back-to-Work Allowance
  • Back-to-Work Enterprise Allowance
  • Short-term Enterprise Allowance
  • Farm Assist
  • Rural Social Scheme

Eligible Individuals who are not Welfare Payment Recipients

Individuals who are not in receipt of a welfare payment from DEASP and whose circumstances are described below are eligible to participate.

  • Former sole traders and business owners
  • Recent graduates who are unemployed
  • Homemakers
  • Retirees seeking to return to the workplace
  • Individuals who fail to qualify for social welfare payments because of a spouse’s income
  • Individuals signing on for credits but in receipt of no social welfare payment
  • Individuals who have recently accepted redundancy payments
  • Non-European Economic Area (EEA) nationals holding immigration Stamp 4

Programme Duration Conditions for Welfare Recipients

Programmes offered by Skillnet Ireland networks may be full or part-time and may be continuous or staggered over time. Programmes typically will incorporate a work placement, the duration of which is included in the overall course duration.

Programmes of 20 or less days’ duration

Programmes of 20 or less days’ duration may be pursued without prior approval from Intreo Offices/DEASP Scheme Areas. Individuals in receipt of a Job-seekers payment or other payment (listed above) should inform their local offices, wherever possible in advance, of their intention to participate in such short programmes.

Programmes Exceeding 20 days’ Duration

Individuals in receipt of a Job-seekers payment or other payment (listed above) must receive prior approval from INTREO Offices/DEASP Scheme Areas to participate on programmes delivered by training networks which exceeds 20 days in duration. For example, Disability Allowance recipients should contact the Disability Allowance Section within DEASP.

Ineligible Unemployed Individuals

Skillnet Ireland, under its current mandate, does not provide training to unemployed people who fall into any of the following categories:

  1. Current participants on Jobs Initiative (JI) Schemes
  2.  Non-European Economic Area (EEA) nationals holding immigration Stamp 1, Stamp 2 or Stamp 3
  3.  Full-time students engaged in second or third-level education.

Important Additional Information for Unemployed Individuals

Please note that:

  • Once eligibility has been established, it is the responsibility of the Skillnet network to decide who participates in training based on the network’s programme selection criteria
  • Network managers may seek information about previous work history, education and career aspirations to ensure programmes that candidates are interested in completing are relevant
  • If training occurs on the same day as a signing day, it is the responsibility of the learner to inform the INTREO Office and arrange an alternative signing day prior to commencing training
  • All trainees are required to complete relevant programme documentation including a Participant Profile Form and a Training Evaluation Form
  • After training is complete, learners may be contacted by Training Networks, Skillnet Ireland or a representative of Skillnet Ireland for the purposes of evaluating programmes and determining how learners have progressed since the completion of training
  • Learners must be resident in the Republic of Ireland

Rebrand Yourself Programme

Programme Overview:

A 5 day virtual training programme to help individuals rebuild and rebrand themselves to secure future employment. Trainees will develop key skills for their personal and professional life. This course is suitable for anyone who is currently unemployed.

Learning outcomes:

  1. To understand the importance of you as your own brand when returning to the workplace
  2. To understand the essentials of teamwork and have the skills to work as part of a team
  3. To communicate effectively with individuals/teams and management
  4. To obtain effective team management skills
  5. To develop key skills and techniques to build personal impact, influence and effectiveness when dealing with people
  6. To know what a good CV looks like and have the skills to compose one
  7. To prepare yourself effectively for interviews
  8. To develop a personal contingency plan

Management Development Programme

Programme Overview:

This 4 day programme will help trainees to develop their management skills focusing on areas such as marketing, customer care, leadership, finance and personal branding. This course is designed to help anyone who is unemployed to upskill and be ready to return to work. Trainees must attend all course days.

Learning outcomes:

  1. To understand how to market your business to your target audience
  2. To know the new customer care approaches and how to continue delivering exceptional customer service
  3. To understand the basics of finance to perform your job role effectively
  4. To know how to lead your team successfully through change
  5. To build your personal brand for future employment

Supervisory Skills

Programme Overview:

A 5 day programme to help you enhance your supervisory skills for your current job role or to upskill individuals to progress to a supervisor level within the hospitality industry. This course will give you the skills to lead and communicate effectively, to manage and motivate teams, to create successful teams and manage time efficiently. This course is the perfect opportunity to develop personally and professionally.

Learning outcomes:

  1. To understand effective communication in your role as a supervisor
  2. To know how to manage and motivate your team
  3. To understand your role as a leader
  4. To know how to manage time efficiently and plan effectively
  5. To understand how to design and deliver standard operating procedures
  6. To understand the importance of teamwork and know how to create successful teamwork

Assessments

Assessment 1 (TBC)

Communications – each trainee to will be required to stand up in front of the group and talk about a subject of their choice for 10 minutes. This will be recorded and assessed.

Assessment 2 (TBC)

Case Study – In groups, plan an upcoming event for which you will be supervising taking into account what you have learned and describe how it will be managed. You must include event description, staffing, timings and costings.
