Programme overview
This qualification offers a hands-on introduction to the world of spirits. You’ll explore the main styles and types of spirits through sight, smell, and taste to develop an understanding of the key factors affecting flavours and aromas. Successful candidates will be able to list the principal spirits categories, state their defining characteristics, and know the key principles involved in the storage and service of spirits. They will consequently be in a position to answer customer queries and provide recommendations for spirits service. Upon successful completion, you will receive a WSET certificate and lapel pin.

- List and state the purpose of the main production processes and stills
commonly used in the production of spirits. - Name the principal categories and types of spirit and state their defining
characteristics. - Know and recognise the common equipment and principles involved in the
storage and service of spirits.
Who is this course suitable for?
This course is intended for people who have little or no prior knowledge of spirits.
It is designed to provide a sound but simple introduction to spirits. The qualification will assist those who
need a basic familiarity with the main styles and categories of spirits, for example people who work with
spirits as part of a larger beverage portfolio, in the retail and hospitality sectors.
Spirits
Spirits will be dispatch in 20ml sample packs, this will include 10 samples for the level 1 award in spirits.

Assessment
Assessment is by a closed-book exam of 30 multiple-choice questions.
This qualification is regulated by Ofqual. The exam will take place online via remote adjudication
Trainer Profile- Nicholas Ryan
Nicholas Ryan, originally from Limerick on the West coast of Ireland is well educated in the spirits industry, helping others to learn more about the distillation, maturation and tasting processes. Specialising in the new WSET Level 1 & 2 Award in Spirit, he is passionate about Irish Whiskey and traditional styles of Poitin.
